Homophobia, grief, violence, bullying Time Out follows Barclay, who is a basketball legend in his small town. But when he comes out as gay, he’s suddenly met with hostility he never expected. His friend Amy brings him along to her voting rights group and there he meets Christopher. The two have never been each other’s biggest fans but soon sparks fly and Barclay must decide if he’s ready to take a shot at the love he’s been fighting for.
Out of the gate, Time Out starts off with action as Barclay comes out as gay to his entire community in a pep rally speech. And the drama just escalates from there. What I enjoyed most about this book was the character development, especially when it came to Barclay. As he navigated the many challenges surrounding coming out in a very homophobic town, he made mistakes along the way but also strengthened his relationships with his friends and family. Barclay learned a lot about himself as a person and what it truly meant to be there for someone. However, I would have liked to see a bit more development when it came to the side characters like Tabby and Amy. The atmosphere of the small town setting really came through in the writing and little details such as Barclay knowing the names of local business owners. With the fast-paced plot and short chapters, Time Out is a quick read. I'd recommend it as a fun beach read, or for anyone who loves binge-reading books. Barclay and Christopher's relationship was a very slow burn but worth the wait! I was rooting for them from the first chapter. While there is a cute romance in Time Out, there was also a political activism aspect that I enjoyed. Barclay and his friends worked diligently to encourage their classmates and fellow members of the community to sign up to vote in their town's elections. It was definitely inspiring! Time Out is a quick read with a lot of depth, covering topics like grief and corruption while also delivering an adorable romance story! I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of Time Out by Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner, and Carlyn Greenwald! I hope you enjoyed it! What's your favourite sport to play or watch? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Tuesday bookworms! Welcome to my review of Lia Park and the Heavenly Heirlooms by Jenna Yoon. Thank you to Simon & Schuster for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. content warnings
Bullying, violence Book 2 in the Lia Park series follows Lia and Joon as they start their studies at the International Magic Academy. But things aren’t calm for long when the evil nine-headed King of Darkness attacks the school and steals one of the heavenly heirlooms. To stop him from destroying the 3 heavenly heirlooms and plunging the world into darkness, Lia, Joon, and their friends must go on a mission to save the precious artifacts. But as more suspicious obstacles get in their way, Lia starts to wonder if someone from their own group is sabotaging them.
After an intriguing first book, I was excited to see more of Lia and Joon, especially in a boarding school setting. The International Magic Academy was fun to learn about and helped continue the world-building from book 1. The different magical abilities, various houses, and magical weapons were also exciting and made me want to learn more about the school and its traditions. However, a majority of the book took place at the academy and the quest began much later on, which caused the beginning half to be on the slower side. But once they started their mission it was full of action and explored more Korean myths. In terms of the writing style, it flowed nicely and was easy to follow, making it a quick read. I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Lia Park and the Heavenly Heirlooms by Jenna Yoon. I hope you enjoyed it! Which magical weapon would you rather have? A sword, a spear, or a bow and arrows? Let me know in the comments below! |
