Hospitalization, injury Britt Hanson is one of the best soccer players on her school team, at least she was before an injury put an end to her dreams of paying in college. So when she's given the chance to travel to England to do a literary themed scavenger hunt, she jumps at the chance. After all, the prize money could help pay for college. There, she meets Luke, a bookworm who can't technically help her solve the clues but she invites to come along anyway. As she travels around England, Brit learns a lot about its bookish history, and a bit about herself.
With summer officially here, I've definitely been craving some travel themed books. That element was one of the things I enjoyed the most about Love & Other Great Expectations. I loved learning about all the interesting places Brit and Luke visited and how they were connected to classic literature. The descriptions were well done and the atmosphere of the writing made it easy to picture each historic site. The characters all had their own backstories but I wish that we could have delved more into them. Especially when it came to Luke and Brit. I think I would have been able to connect with them a bit more if I had more time to get to know their personalities better. That said we did see some development from Brit. I enjoyed the aspect of her trying to refigure out her life after her injury. It shed light on the idea that sometimes losing a dream can be devastating, which I haven't read about much in YA. Overall a cute read with fun bookish references but I would have enjoyed getting to know the characters more. I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Love & Other Great Expectations by Becky Dean! I hope you enjoyed it! Have you ever been to England? If not, what attractions would you want to visit? Happy Friday bookworms! Today I'm reviewing Places We've Never Been by Kasie West! Thank you to Penguin Teen Canada for sending me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. content warnings
Cancer, sexism, hospitalization, mention of bullying Skyler was Nora's best friend, but after he moved away years ago, their friendship has been reduced to liking each other's Instagram posts. So when their families decide to do a joint RV road trip, Nora can't wait to rekindle their friendship. Except when Skyler arrives he's distant and cold. As they travel to fun destinations, can the two set aside their differences and find out what really happened to their friendship, and maybe turn it into more?
I haven't read many books about friendship breakups before so I was very interested in picking this up! I enjoyed learning about Skyler and Nora's past and seeing how their friendship evolved over time. I thought that the progression of their frenemy relationship was well done and not rushed. Unfortunately, I wish that we saw the same level of growth with the side characters and had time to get to know them more. Nora was probably my favourite character because she dreams of becoming a game designer. It was fun to see how she viewed the world through video games and her passion to go into a field mostly dominated by men. The RV trip itself was fun to read about and I enjoyed the various settings and places the families visited. There was another plot point that we didn't really get to see until the end of the book and I wish it had been more developed. The romance was very cute and I'd recommend this book to fans of the friends to lovers trope. Overall this was a fun, fluffy summer read but I wish that we got to delve into some aspects more. I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Places We've Never Been by Kasie West! I hope you enjoyed it! Do you enjoy camping? Or are you more of an indoors person?
