Hi bookworms and welcome to my review of Scorned Prince by Brady Hunsaker! Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. Content Warnings
Parental abuse, death of a parent, violence, death, murder Scorned Prince follows a prince named Migo who is trying to win back his mother's favour in order to save his life and stop the assassination she has planned for him. We also follow Katsi, a shaman girl, who Migo is charged with killing. All Katsi wants to do is stop a conflict that has been happening for years between her tribe and Migo's mother. And when she uncovers a plot that could mean thousands could die on both sides, she and Migo must each decide where their loyalties lie.
I was really intrigued by the premise of Scorned Prince, especially the magic system and political intrigue, which is what made me pick up this book. I was excited to learn more about the world and its history which we get snippets of throughout the story. The world building was well done and I was able to picture the setting clearly while reading. On the other hand, the writing style when it came to action and characters felt a bit more like we were told what was happening as opposed to seeing it unfold ourselves. The pacing of the plot also felt very fast and I would have liked to see some scenes drawn out more so that we could fully grasp the gravity of the situation and spend more time with the characters. I enjoyed seeing Katsi grow and become more involved in her magic and past. She was very determined and was willing to do anything for what she thought was right. Unfortunately, I felt that the romance didn't have enough time to develop and at times felt like it came out of nowhere. I preferred reading about Katsi and Migo's individual internal struggles more. One of my favourite character was Scales, a lizard the Katsi saves in the beginning of the story. I thought the little pet was very cute and provided some relief from the danger and action of the plot. Ultimately I liked the concept but found the pacing to be too fast. I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of Scorned Prince by Brady Hunsaker. I hope you enjoyed it! What are your favourite fantasy books? Happy Sunday bookworms! Today I’m reviewing this stunning Puffin Classics edition of Mine for Keeps by Jean Little. Thank you to Penguin Random House for sending me this book as part of your Tundra Books You’re a Classic campaign in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores and you can purchase it here!
A Canadian classic, Mine for Keeps is set in the 1960s and follows Sally as she returns home from boarding school to live with her family. This is an adjustment because she’ll now be the only girl in her class with cerebral palsy. While she gets used to her new surroundings, she also is given a dog named Susie and the pair become fast friends. This was my first time reading this classic story and I was not disappointed! I loved Sally's character and getting to follow her experience coming back home. One of my favourite aspects about Mine for Keeps was the development of Sally's relationships. Her family is very supportive and attentive, which helped grow Sally's confidence as time went on. I also loved her little dog Suzie! Her connection with Sally was adorable and seeing how the two supported one another in difficult times was so heartwarming. Themes of accessibility were also prevalent and a main component of the story. This Puffin Classics edition has an introduction written by Jean’s niece and it details the changes the book has undergone since its initial publication. This includes replacing old terms used in the 1960s to describe disabilities. She also explains Jean’s inspiration for the story that came from her and her students’ frustrations. All in all a great read with an adorable new cover! Mine for Keeps is a heartwarming story filled with themes of friendship, family, and love. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a feel good read. I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Mine for Keeps by Jean Little! I hope you enjoyed it!
