Hello bookworms! Today's review is about a YA debut novel called The Legendary Shiver. I would like to start off by saying that I was contacted by the author, J.H. MacAl for an honest review. Thank you! That being said, everything stated is my own and honest opinion. Now let's get into my thoughts! The Legendary Shiver is a YA contemporary novel that is centered around Will and his best friend Ruby who is on her way to stardom in the music industry. The novel details their experiences and all the troubles that come with being famous and following your dreams. Since I don't read very much about celebrities and stardom, this was a book that was definitely out of my usual reading genre. The writing was well done, however there were multiple spelling errors that detached me from the story. I enjoyed the descriptions used, and aside from the errors it was easy to follow. The plot of this book was fast paced and kept you interested in the characters and their lives. It is mainly focused around Will and his love for Ruby, which he keeps hidden. I found Will to be entertaining but my favourite characters would have to be John and Keysha. While Will and Ruby were at many times self-centered and confused, John and Keysha were always there to support them. In my opinion Ruby is very immature and at many points I was constantly questioning Will's choices. Since there was many plot twists happening in the book I found them to be sometimes rushed, which diminished my enjoyment while reading. The aspect of the music industry was something I enjoyed and it was entertaining to learn more about marketing and public image. It also speaks to the harsh reality of living in the spotlight with pressures to succeed. If you want a quick, fast paced novel about celebrities on their rise to fame, this is one you could check out. Overall this book was a 3/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐. That was my review of The Legendary Shiver by J.H MacAl. I hope you guys enjoyed it! I love supporting Indie authors and can't wait to continue in the future. What's a book you read recently? Hello Bookworms! Welcome to a review I've been super excited to write. First I'd like to thank the author IQ Malcolm who gave me this book in exchange for an honest review. Now without further ado let's get into it! Waking Spero is a dual perspective sci-fi novel where three teens wake up on a strange planet with no memory of how they got there. From waking up, the book follows them on their adventure exploring this crazy planet while they try to piece together what brought them there. Right from the beginning this book had me hooked, the first sentence is gripping. "I used to wonder what it would feel like to be buried alive." The writing was easy to follow and made you want to read more. Throughout reading I constantly kept telling myself "just one more chapter" then I'd look at the clock and find an hour had gone by. If you're a fan of pop references this book is definitely for you. I was laughing and smiling while reading this book, as the characters mentioned Bill Nye the Science Guy, Lord of the Rings and more. One aspect that I've realized that I love is when the author casually throws in how to say a character's name. I found the pronunciation of Unai's name to be super helpful as not knowing how to pronounce names drives me crazy. I also found that the dual perspective was really well done and flowed nicely. It was exciting to see both Clover and Unai's thoughts about different events. The world building in this book was also well done. The creatures and plants were very imaginative and wonderful to read about. The plot of this book was intriguing and there was an added level of mystery since the characters had no idea what was going on. I never once was bored and the story progressed well, being slow where it needed to be and fast paced in moments of tension. The characters were one of my favourite features of Waking Spero. Unai is definitely a new favourite character. His personality was fleshed out and I found him to be really enjoyable. He's compassionate, hardworking and really funny. Clover on the other hand was a complete opposite of Unai, but I also really enjoyed her perspective. When I think of Clover, I think of a strong and stoic soldier. But I also think of her compassion and leadership qualities. Alena was an intriguing character as well and it was great to see her development. The way that Unai and Clover interacted with her was heartwarming. I also cannot talk about characters without mentioning Geode. He's so cute and adorable! I would have loved to see more of the planet and it's creatures. I also wish we could have seen more of the character's background so that we could connect with them even more. With that in mind I still enjoyed every minute reading this book and can't wait to read the next one. If you love books like Aurora Rising I would seriously recommend this one! It was a quick and fun read with an ending that leaves you craving for the next book. I can't wait to see what happens to the characters and their journey. This book was a 4/5 Stars for me! That's it for my review of Waking Spero by IQ Malcolm. I hope you guys enjoyed it! What's a book that you recently read and loved? Let me know in the comments below! |
