Violence, enslavement, death, suicide, kidnapping, blood, scars Simi serves the gods as a Mami Wata (a mermaid) who collects the souls of those who die at sea and bless their journeys back home. But Simi's life is thrown completely off course when she decides to do the unthinkable, save a boy's life. In doing so she's broken an ancient decree and put all Mami Wata in danger. To save them, she must journey to the Supreme Creator to make amends. But not everything is as it seems and it looks like she'll need some help from the rescued boy who knows more than he should.
When I first heard about this book I immediately knew I had to pick it up. The overall premise and unique spin on the classic tale of The Little Mermaid piqued my interest right away. Not to mention this stunning cover! The world building in this book is very rich and in depth. As a lover of all things mythology I was really excited to learn about all of the different gods in this world. Throughout the book we hear any myths and old tales while also encountering various magical creatures. These aspects were what I loved most about the book. They kept me engaged and felt life like, as if these fables and stories were actually told in real life. I also enjoyed Simi, our main character. I liked her determined personality and her intense loyalty. I admired also that she was selfless, constantly thinking about others rather than herself. She's a very strong role model and seeing her interactions with the other characters was a lot of fun. The plot was very engaging with many exciting events. However, at times I felt it became a bit slow and would have liked for the transition between scenes to be a little quicker. The journey of the plot itself was unique but unfortunately some of the big plot twists felt a bit predictable and I was able to guess what would happen. The ending wrapped up some plot lines but opened a lot more leaving room for a sequel which sounds promising. Ultimately I loved the world building and the mythology of this book, but wasn't shocked by the plot twists. I gave this book 3.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. That's all for my review of Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen! I hope you enjoyed it! If you were stuck on a desert island and could only have one book. Which would you choose? Blood, physical abuse, scars, chronic pain, self harm (not on page), violence, death, bodies/corpses, murder, fire, burning buildings When a ragtag group of young criminals team up to pull off an impossible crime, they never knew just what they were getting into. Lured by the promise of more money than they've ever dreamed of, they embark on a mission to steal a heavily guarded treasure from the most powerful sorcerer in the city. Faced with these unsurmountable odds, can the new friends pull off this legendary heist, or has their luck finally run out?
From the first page I was immediately sucked into this book. We're thrown head first into the action of a past heist. My favourite aspect of this book was the characters. We have a ragtag group of young thieves, all loveable in their own way. Each member of the group is unique from the others and I found myself wanting to get to know them all. While we did learn a bit about each character, we learned most about their leader Cal. The book was written from his perspective and we got to look into his past with various flashbacks. I thought the writing style fit the mood and tone of the book very well. While this is middle grade there was still a lot of dark themes that I thought were handled with care. I felt that the writing style conveyed the age of the characters and how they had to grow up fast because of their pasts. However aside from Cal, I didn't feel very connected to the other characters. I think that if I had gotten to know them more I would have been more invested in their roles as a whole. I also felt that the group grew very close together a bit too quickly. The plot was very exciting. You guys know by now that I love a good heist story and this book definitely delivered. We had an impossible crime, plans being made, daring escapes, and underground contacts. Around 70% of the way through this book took a turn I wasn't expecting. It threw me off guard a little but once I understood what was happening I enjoyed it. This turn made for a unique read and set it apart from other heist books I've read. We were left on a cliffhanger and I'm definitely excited to see what will happen next. A thrilling heist book sprinkled with fantasy, I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Children of the Fox by Kevin Sands. I hope you enjoyed it! Who would you be in this ragtag group? The leader/con artist, the acrobatic/knife thrower, the researcher, the person with the contacts, or the mysterious climber who can scale any building? Let me know in the comments below! |
