Happy Wednesday bookworms! Today I’m reviewing The Davenports by Krystal Marquis. Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review! content warnings
Racism Set in 1910 Chicago, The Davenports follows Olivia and Helen, the daughters of the Davenport family, their maid Amy-Rose, and their friend Ruby. Each girl has their own dreams and passions and together they must find courage to steer their own path in life, and possibly find romance along the way.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was the setting! 1910 is such an interesting time period to explore, and it captured my attention right away. I had a great time reading about each of the girls. The writing style was easy to follow, and the different perspectives captured their individual personalities. I also liked the wide range of side characters that were featured. They all contributed to the story and developed in their own way as the book progressed. It was interesting to read the author's note at the end to learn more about Krystal's inspiration for The Davenports. We also got a glimpse of her research process, which I loved! I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of The Davenports by Krystal Marquis. I hope you enjoyed it! If you switched places with the main character in your current read for a day, what would you be doing? Let me know in the comments below!
