Happy Thursday bookworms and welcome to my review of The Boy You Always Wanted by Michelle Quach. I was sent an ARC copy by HarperCollins Canada in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. content warnings
Cancer, sexism, death of a parent, science class animal dissection The Boy You Always Wanted is about Francine, a girl who would do anything for her grandfather and wants to make his final wish come true, to see a male heir carry on their family traditions. She knows it's outdated but is determined to enlist the help of Ollie (her family friend and ex-crush). All he needs to do is pretend to be ceremoniously adopted and act like a grandson. Ollie on the other hand, is totally not on board with the plan, especially given how sexist it is, but soon he's more invested in Franchine's scheme (and in her) than he thought possible. Now Francine will need to figure out just what she needs from herself and Ollie, because after all, sometimes the boy you always wanted isn't what you expected.
After loving Michelle's debut, I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint! Once again, I loved Michelle's writing style and found that the dual POVs added a lot of dimension to the plot. We got a wide range of intriguing characters that grabbed my attention immediately. Each of the side characters had their own stories and personalities and created a great community for the book to be set in. I'd have to say that my favourite character was Francine. I loved reading about her journey toward discovering who she really was and what was important to her. I was also rooting for Ollie and Francine from the beginning. The romance was very well-paced and had all the heartwarming vibes! While it does feature an adorable romance, The Boy You Always Wanted also explores heavy topics like family expectations, health struggles, and self-love. This range of topics created a multi-dimensional reading experience. With a focus on family and self-discovery, plus an adorable romance, you have to add The Boy You Always Wanted to your tbr! I cannot wait to read more of Michelle's work in the future. I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of The Boy You Always Wanted by Michelle Quach! I hope you enjoyed it!
