It’s Monday bookworms! Welcome to my review of Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman, Illustrated by Chris Wormell. Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. content Warnings
Violence, death This stunning edition comes with full colour illustrations and is a prequel to the His Dark Materials series and it tells the story of how aeronaut Lee Scorseby and armoured bear lorek Byrinson first met. After winning his hot air balloon in a poker game, Lee and his daemon Hester decide to travel north. Except when they land, they find themselves tangled in a deadly plot with a corrupt maybe and Lee’s nemesis. In order to get out of this mess he needs the help of an unlikely ally, armoured bear Iorek Byrinson.
This was a fun read! Lee, Hester, and Iorek are some of my favourite characters from the His Dark Materials series so I was excited to learn more about them. The story itself was intriguing and I liked seeing the friendship between the main characters grow. However, I would have enjoyed seeing more individual character development. There was action at every turn, especially because Lee loves to be a risk taker. I wish the story was longer so that we could see more of their adventures together, maybe even a short story collection! In terms of the illustrations, they were detailed and engaging and added a fun aspect to this reading experience. I think that fans of the series will enjoy this special edition! I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman, Illustrated by Chris Wormell. I hope you enjoyed it!
