Hi bookworms! Today I'm coming to you with a review of Gallant by V.E. Schwab. Thank you to HarperCollins Canada for sending me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. Content warnings
Ableism, parental abandonment, murder, death of a parent and sibling, bullying, animal death, violence, grief Olivia Prior has grown up in the Merilance School for girls, her only connection to her mother being a journal that is filled with madness. Then a letter invites Olivia to come to Gallant, except no one is expecting her. There, she meets her cousin Matthew and begins to investigate the old house herself. When she crosses a strange wall in the garden it takes her to a shadow version of the mansion that's ruled by a mysterious figure. One that has been after her family for generations. Will Olivia be able to save her newfound family from this monster? Or will she take a place beside him?
After reading V.E. Schwab's City of Ghosts, I was very excited to pick up Gallant! The idea of the other world behind the wall was very intriguing. Reading about the ghouls and learning the history of the house with Olivia was something I enjoyed the most about this book. We got to piece together her parents' past and learn more about the present as Olivia delved deeper into their secrets. We got to learn a lot about Olivia through Schwab's writing style. The chapters were a good length and the writing was poetic. At times though I found myself losing interest because the writing got a little bit too flowery. Olivia herself was a very interesting character to read about. I enjoyed learning about her personality and her perspective on everything around her. That said I would have also enjoyed learning more about the side characters like Matthew, and seeing them develop more. The setting and atmosphere had a great spooky vibe. It would be a good Halloween read! I'd recommend this to fans of Coraline! I gave this book 3.5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. That's all for my review of Gallant by V.E. Schwab! I hope you enjoyed it!
