Violence, murder, death, drugging, medical procedures, war, torture, gore, corpses, kidnapping, medical procedures, death of a parent Wren Southerland, a powerful healer in the Queen's Guard, has been dismissed after being called "reckless". But when she's sent a letter from a reclusive lord asking her to come to his estate and cure his servant from a mysterious illness, she jumps at the chance to redeem herself. But when she arrives she's shocked to find that the servant isn't a servant at all, but Hal Cavendish, the infamous Reaper of Vesria, her kingdom's sworn enemy. But as secrets start to unravel, the two must team up together if they want to save their kingdoms, and each other.
Where to start with this book? Let me first say that I absolutely loved everything about this book. The characters, the plot, the setting, the writing! Ugh fantastic! The overall dark and atmospheric writing really set an engaging tone throughout the book. The writing was so easy to fall into and kept me reading in anticipation. There were so many lines where I stopped and thought, wow that's beautiful. And others that hit me hard and explained some of my own feelings. I honestly have saved so many quotes from this book. Which is always a good indication that I adored it! The beautiful settings of all three kingdoms add even more to the book. From the descriptions I could vividly picture each place the characters were. It made me feel even more connected to them. The plot was complex and included so many elements. It was a fantasy, romance, mystery, action packed novel all in one. It also surprised me with just how much could fit inside this 400 page book. There wasn't a dull scene throughout and I was constantly invested in the plot. Given how much happens, it was even more amazing that not once did it feel rushed, and each scene was well developed. Something else I'd like to mention was the beautiful interweaving of science and magic in this world. Never before have I seen such a seamless connection between the two. The magic system made so much sense to me (a biology major) and it was so interesting hearing Wren talk about her healing magic. Now let's talk about one of my favourite aspects of the book. The characters! Don't get me started on how much I love these characters 😭. Wren is a fantastic main character. She's honest and real and makes mistakes but is ultimately fuelled by compassion and love. I absolutely love her and would love to be friends with her. She felt so relatable. I also liked the exploration of friendships in this book, Seeing all of Wren's friendships develop, and how she changed as a person was inspiring. I also HAVE to talk about Hal. He absolutely has become a new favourite book boyfriend of mine. Seeing how their relationship slowly developed was fantastic! I found myself smiling so much while reading. I also loved reading about how he changed as a person. All in all I wouldn't change a thing about this book. I had an amazing time reading. I also listened to the audiobook which I HIGHLY recommend as the narrator was fantastic. Everyone go read this book so I can gush with you about it! Down Comes the Night has become a new all time favourite of mine! Of course I gave it 5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft! I hope you enjoyed it!
