Hi bookworms and welcome to my review of Clementine and Danny Save the World (and Each Other) by Livia Blackburne! I was sent an ARC copy by HarperCollins Canada in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. content warnings
Bullying, racism, classism, grief, death Clementine is an anonymous blogger called Hibiscus who reviews tea shops and discusses larger issues within her Chinatown community. And many people love it, except for an anonymous user named BobaBoy888. Meanwhile, Danny’s heart is breaking because of the gentrification of Chinatown, and the only thing that helps his frustration is bickering with Hibiscus, on his BobaBoy888 account. But when he learns a major corporation is threatening to shut down his family’s tea shop, he teams up with Clementine in real life to save their community. The thing is, they don’t know that they’ve been anonymously fighting with each other online for years. Will their relationship be able to survive when the truth comes to light?
I had high hopes for this book. I'm a big fan of the rivals to lovers trope so I was intrigued about how the romance between Clementine and Danny would pan out. It was sweet in the beginning but without getting into spoilers, there were some events that I wasn't a big fan of and had a hard time looking past. I also found that this book focused primarily on Danny as opposed to Clementine. I would have enjoyed learning more about her and her family and seeing her grow as a character. Speaking of the characters, I liked the feeling of community that was created, especially with the various shop owners in Chinatown. The discussion around gentrification and culture grabbed my attention and I was invested in reading more. Overall, I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of Clementine and Danny Save the World (and Each Other) by Livia Blackburne! I hope you enjoyed it! Do you prefer coffee or tea? What’s your favourite flavour? Hello bookworms and welcome to my review of Unordinary Volume 1 by Uru-chan! I was sent an ARC copy by HarperCollins Canada in exchange for an honest review. This book comes out on November 7th! content warnings
Violence, bullying Unordinary follows John, an ordinary teen who is just trying to get through high school in a world full of superpowered people. The only way he’s been able to survive is by staying close to one of the school’s most powerful student, Seraphina. But as other students start to investigate John’s past he’s quickly pulled into a world of turf wars, betrayals, and deadly conspiracies.
I love graphic novels and superpowers so I was excited to dive into the first volume of Unordinary. From the beginning, we're introduced to a wide variety of characters and their different powers. Because there were so many, it took a little while to remember each character and their relationships with each other. But the powers were one of the elements that intrigued me the most. I enjoyed the world building and learning more about John's past. We also got to see more of Seraphina's personality and how the two became friends in the first place. The illustration style was engaging and made it a fast read. That's all for my review of Unordinary Volume 1 by Uru-chan! I hope you enjoyed it! If you could have any superpower, what would you choose? Let me know in the comments below! |
