Violence, death of a parent, forced confinement Jolie Hook, daughter of the famous Captain Hook, is desperate to save her father after he was kidnapped by the conniving Peter Pan. She has no choice but to make a bargain with Pan, make it to his castle within three days, and he will let her father go. As she faces the dangerous Neverwoods, and the nightmarish games her enemy sends, she starts to unravel the mysteries of Peter Pan. While she races against the clock, Jolie will learn more about the past while she tries to bring an end to Neverland’s fiercest unending war.
I was hooked on this book right from the first line! (Pun intended 😂). From the beginning, we're swept into the magical world of Neverland, but it's not the classic one you'd think of. I really enjoyed the world building in this story. Even though it's a retelling of a classic that I know well, each piece of history that was shared was exciting and new. The Legacy of Villains pays homage to details from the original, but also creates something brand new and refreshing to read. I especially enjoyed the twists on the characters themselves! Jolie was a strong and inspiring female lead, and I rooted for her from the beginning. Seeing her explore Neverland and learn more about the past was fun to read about. I just had to know what would happen next! I also enjoyed seeing her grow as a character as the story progressed. The enemies to lovers trope was done really well! There were distinct periods of time where the characters were enemies, and then we saw them slowly transition to more. However, I would have liked the in between period to be a bit longer. It would have been fun to see the characters become closer as friends before their relationship progressed further. This book also explores the idea of family expectations and pressure which added more depth to the story. I love Juliet's writing style! The prose flowed nicely and seamlessly through chapters and perspectives. The chapters themselves are also short (something I love!) and this made the book easily bingeable. I've saved so many great lines and quotes that I loved! Another aspect that was interesting was at the beginning of each chapter there were little snippets of a fictional book called The Mostly Accurate Traveler's Guide to the Ancient World of Neverland. In them we got to learn facts about Neverland and its inhabitants, everything from how the government runs, to what to buy at the gift shop! These were a great touch and give insight on what's to come in the chapter, and they made the world feel more expansive and real! The ending was satisfying but also left me so excited for the sequel! I can't wait to learn more about this world and see the characters continue to grow. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves Peter Pan and the enemies to lovers trope! The Legacy of Villains is a captivating and magical tale, filled with daring sword fights, engaging characters, and exciting romance. It talks about the importance of forging your own destiny and above all, the power of love. Get ready to be charmed by this shadowy version of Peter Pan, and fall in love with this expansive world. I gave this book 4.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. That's a wrap on my review of The Legacy of Villains by Juliet Lockwood! I hope you enjoyed it! Who's your favourite character from Peter Pan? Happy Saturday bookworms! Today I'm reviewing Codex Black: A Fire Among Clouds by Camilo Moncada Lozano. Thank you to IDW Publishing for sending me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book comes out April 4th! content warnings
Violence A Fire Among Clouds is the first book in the Codex Black series and it follows Donají, a girl that is thought of as a hero by her village. She sets off on a quest to find her missing father along wit the help of a god who lives in her poncho. On their travels they meet Itzcacalotl a winged warrior who she teams up with to fulfill her quest. But just what was her father mixed up in, and how did their search lead them into a fight with a giant bat monster attacking a village?
This series was originally a webcomic, which I thought was a lot of fun! I had also never read a book set in this time period before which intrigued me. I'm a big fan of mythology in general so I love learning more about different gods, goddesses, and myths. I enjoyed those aspects in A Fire Among Clouds and thought that the poncho god was an informative but funny character. I wish we could have seen a bit more development in terms of Donají and Itzcacalotl's characters but I think we'll see more of that in the coming sequels. The art style was really cute and kept me engaged with the story. The overall concept of the book was interesting and I especially liked seeing Donají go on a quest to search for her missing father. It added an additional mystery element to the plot. Codex Black: A Fire Among Clouds is a fun graphic novel with an intriguing mythology twist. I gave this book 3/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Codex Black: A Fire Among Clouds by Camilo Moncada Lozano. I hope you enjoyed it! If you could travel back in time to any time period, when would you choose?
