Hello bookworms! Today's recommendations are based on what I think are books that deserve more love in the reading community. The books listed are from a variety of genres, from contemporary, historical fiction, mystery and sci-fi. They are all books that I have enjoyed very much but found that not many other people had heard about them. I hope that by the end of this post you will be inspired to delve deeper into these stories and come to love them as much as I do. 1. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White is about a girl named Elizabeth who is taken in by the Frankenstein family because she is the only one that can tame the anger of their son Victor. As Victor's anger and experimental nature begins to grow, it creates danger for everyone around him. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is determined to remain useful in order to survive and is willing to do anything to keep her vital position in the family, even if it means covering for Victor's dark experiments. This historical fiction gives new life to the classic Mary Shelley tale of Frankenstein. I found that as I was rooting for Elizabeth I felt conflicted because of the actions and decisions she made. It reminded me of the confliction one feels towards Doctor Frankenstein in the original story. Kiersten White was able to make a new and enthralling tale while remaining true to the classic. Full of twists and turns, and suspense at every corner, you will fly through this story. The author also recently revealed that this book was picked up by Sony to be turned into a TV show! I am so excited to see where this new venture takes the story. And I will definitely be tuning in! 2. The Serpent KingOur next underrated book is The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. This contemporary novel follows three best friends in a coming of age story in a small southern town. Dill is the son of a convicted Pentecostal minister, as such he is desperately trying to separate himself from the scrutiny of others but finds it difficult and is unsure what he wants to do in life. He takes comfort in his best friends Travis and Lydia. However his friends have lives of their own, Travis is a fanboy that is obsessed with a high fantasy book series and has gotten in touch with a fellow fangirl who may be becoming more than a friend. Lydia is known for her online fashion blog and is planning on pursuing a career outside of town to achieve her dreams. All three must set aside disagreements and band together to get through their last year of highschool. As events begin to unfold within the story, the relationships between these characters develops and fleshes out into deep trust and love. I found myself crying at the end of the book because I had become so attached to the plot and its characters. The Serpent King will make you emotional in all the right ways. 3. AirbornWho doesn't love a unique sci-fi/historical fiction set in the air? Well, that's exactly what Airborn by Kenneth Oppel is about. It follows the main character Matt who works on a luxury air blimp named the Aurora. Matt was born in the sky and feels most at home when in the air. One day he meets a dying traveller who raves about flying creatures, and until he meets the man's granddaughter he never believed it to be true. This adventure will have you gasping for air. (That's for sure) When I first picked up Airborn I had found it in my library on a whim. I was intrigued by the plot and decided to give it a try, and I'm very glad I did. This book is the first of a trilogy and is very complex and unpredictable. Matt is a relatable character, and I enjoyed his love of flying and found myself looking at air travel differently, where I was once weary I began to see the amazing ingenuity of it all. 4. Subject to ChangeSubject to Change completely caught me off guard with how much I loved it. This book is a coming of age story about Declan. A boy living in a small town in Quebec, who is dealing with the emotional stress of his parents' divorce. Not to mention how his brother is going down the wrong path and Declan's declining grades. This book is about Declan's inner adventure in discovering what he wants to do with his life, along with dealing with the pain of his father's absence. As soon as I read the first page I fell in love with Declan's character. I was rooting for him the whole time while reading. Quite frankly all of the characters each have their own reasons to love them. From Leah's determination, to Declan's stubbornness, everyone can find themselves in at least one of the characters. The ending is what got me the most, needless to say I was crying. This is a book I will never stop recommending. 5. Broken ThingsOur last, but certainly not least, book for today is Broken Things by Lauren Oliver. Broken Things is a multiperspective novel that switches from Mia and Brynn. It's been 5 years since Summer Marks was murdered in the woods. And everyone thinks Mia and Brynn did it, and it's been haunting them ever since. The thing is, they didn't do it. After that pivotal moment in their lives, Brynn and Mia have been suffering in the public eye. Now after a recent small development they may finally find out the true murderer. Where to begin with this book. I listened to this book on audio as I read along with a physical copy. The audiobook has multiple cast members and I would definitely recommend the audiobook as a means to read it. The characters are flawed but loveable. The content was of course gruesome at times but was not overly so, meaning I could read it comfortably but sometimes had to stop listening at night. Seeing the progression of the characters and the mystery unfold, along with dealing with the emotional attachment to the situation was amazing to see. A great YA mystery that I would recommend to anyone looking to puzzle out a murder while seeing a friendship tested to its limits. Well that's all 5 books for today! I hope you enjoyed! What books do you think are underrated? Is there any that you think are overrated? Let me know below! Have an awesome day and keep reading!
