Happy Saturday bookworms! Today I'm sharing my review of The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Content warnings
Abusive relationship (emotional/physical mentioned), death of a parent and grandparent, murder, violence The Inheritance Games is about a girl named Avery who unexpectedly inherits a large fortune from a man she doesn't know. The only catch is that she has to move into Hawthorne House, a place full of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately the grandsons of the billionaire live there as well, and they're definitely not happy that she's inheriting billions.
I was super excited to read this book. I've heard so many good things about it and it sounded right up my alley. Unfortunately I think I might have overhyped it for myself. I definitely saw the connection between this book and Knives Out. They have a lot of similarities in terms of one surprise person inheriting a lot of money and the family being hostile about it. I enjoyed the games and mystery aspect of this book but I wish it was a more central theme to the story. What I disliked was that I felt like a lot of problems could have been solved if the main character talked to the other characters. Avery spent a lot of time trying to find information that so many people around her already knew. I also unfortunately was able to guess a lot of the plot twists early on in the book. However, I did like the different characters and Avery's backstory. I think that I would have connected with them more if we had more scenes just getting to know them as people. The short chapters and writing style also made for a very quick read. Even though I was a little underwhelmed by this book I'm still interested in continuing the series. I gave this book 3.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. That's all for my review of The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I hope you enjoyed it! What's an unpopular bookish opinion you have?
