Hi bookworms and welcome to Wednesday! Today I'll be reviewing Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee. I'd like to thank Penguin Teen Canada for sending me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review! This book comes out next Tuesday! Now let's get into it!
Valora Luck has just quit her job and smuggled herself onto the Titanic in hopes of reuniting with her brother and starting a new life in the United States. All she has to do is convince the owner of the Ringling Brothers Circus to hire them as an acrobatic duo. But it seems that her brother Jamie might not be as excited as she is. While Val hides out in first class, the unsinkable Titanic begins to sink, and Val, Jamie and their newfound friends are racing against time to survive. I first heard about this book when I went to a virtual event that was held by Penguin Teen Canada, called HerStory Tea Time. It was a lot of fun and Stacey Lee was one of the author guests. I was immediately interested in the book because I love learning about the Titanic. I also love how we follow a group of people not often talked about, which are the Chinese passengers on the Titanic. This story also talks about the racial discrimination and hardships that our main characters face. It was heartbreaking but also very important to read about how this impacted the character's lives. Overall the plot was mainly character based until the last portion of the book where we saw a lot of action. The beginning was a little bit slow because of this but I also grew to enjoy hearing about each of the characters. That said I would have liked to learn a bit more about their backstories to become even more attached to them. I really enjoyed the strong sibling relationship that Val and Jamie had. I find that this isn't found often enough in young adult books. The writing style worked very well for this story and I definitely felt transported to the deck of the Titanic. The ending broke my heart and left my eyes watery. I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of Luck of the Titanic! I hope you enjoyed it! What event in history do you love to learn about? Let me know in the comments below!
