Happy Saturday bookworms and welcome to another review! Today I am reviewing I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee. I buddy read this book with Rose from Books of Magic and Mystery, and spoiler alert we absolutely loved it! I'm so excited to talk about it so let's get started!
I'll Be the One follows Skye Shin, who has heard all her life that fat girls can't dance, can't wear bright colours, and can't bring attention to themselves. But Skye loves K-Pop and all things dance, music and singing! So naturally to prove everyone else wrong, including her own mother, she enters into an internationally televised talent competition where she experiences stunning performances, drama, and makes new friends. But she never anticipated all the fat-phobic beauty standards of the Korean pop industry, her sudden media fame, or the sparks that fly with her fellow competitor Henry Cho. I honestly could talk about this book forever! From the moment I started reading it, I loved it. I immediately fell in love with Skye and her personality. She's quirky, independent and most positively herself, which was incredibly inspiring! The writing style flows so smoothly and the dialogue so naturally that I could almost believe that these were real people! The overall theme was incredibly cute and fun, I have to say that every time I picked this book up to read I had a smile on my face. Something about the characters and their adorable yet funny experiences were so heartwarming. We also have a lot of diverse representation, including many queer characters. Skye, herself is bi, and we also have a queer couple, Lana and Tiffany which Skye befriends on her journey! We also have a plus sized main character and Asian American representation. Let's talk about the relationships in this book! I absolutely loved Skye's friendships with Lana and Tiffany. They were incredibly supportive of each other from the beginning and they each showed so much loyalty and love towards one another. We also HAVE to talk about the love interest in this book, Henry Cho. Now it's safe to say that he has very quickly become another one of my favourite book boyfriends. He also was incredibly sweet and adorable. While being someone constantly surrounded by media, he still was very quirky and awkward in the best way. The way he supported Skye was amazing, he truly is fantastic. I also really enjoyed Skye's relationship with her dad, he was her number one fan in all ways. Unfortunately her mother was definitely the opposite of her dad. However I felt that this situation was handled very well. It was not unrealistic at all and felt very life like. All of these amazing features, along with the overall message to love yourself, no matter what others, (or yourself), think about you. Needless to say this has become a new all time favourite of mine which I will be recommending to everyone that will listen! I recently learned that this story has been picked up to be a movie! Which is so exciting! I definitely need a sequel for this book! I'm anxiously awaiting to see what adventures Skye will go on next! Of course I gave this book a 5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee! I hope you enjoyed it! I had a fantastic time reading this book, and I wouldn't be surprised to see me rereading it very soon.
