Happy Friday bookworms! Today I am reviewing Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado! I'd like to thank Penguin Teen Canada for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review! This book comes out on February 2nd!
Growing up as a brown fat girl in a white Connecticut suburb, has been very tough for Charlie, especially when her mom is continuously trying to get her to lose weight. She's also bombarded with thoughts of how she should be smaller, whiter and quieter. But Charlie has her best friend Amelia who is always in her corner, even if she finds herself comparing the two of them constantly. So when she starts a tentative relationship with sweet and sensitive Brian, everything is perfect until she learns one thing... that he asked out Amelia first, and everything gets turned upside down. Where to begin with this book! I had such a fun time reading this! I loved Charlie, she was so amazing and I would love to be her friend. I felt that she really progressed throughout the course of the book in terms of self-love and confidence. One thing I enjoyed was that there was development in terms of so many different relationships and it was done so beautifully! Not only do we explore the Charlie's journey with herself, but also with her best friend Amelia, and her mom as well! In terms of plot, I felt that the synopsis did give a little too much away, so I wasn't very shocked. However I did enjoy the romance which was adorable!! Brian is the cutest, and their relationship was so much fun to read about. While we deal with important issues, there was so many funny moments and pop culture references. (I loved the Hamilton references!) The writing style was clear and flowed nicely, it definitely had Charlie's charm. Learning to love yourself is such an important message and it is very prominent and impactful in this story. I felt so many emotions while reading this. One minute I was reading and smiling to myself, another I'd be thoughtful and sympathetic for Charlie. I know for sure that I'll remember Charlie and her message for a very long time. I definitely recommend this book to everyone! A fantastic diverse read, with so many positive messages! I gave this book 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review for Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado. I hope you enjoyed it! In honour of Charlie's love for her friend Amelia, let me know in the comments a friend that means a lot to you and why they're so amazing!
