Blood, murder, death, death of a parent and sibling, torture, kidnapping, violence, racism, animal death, arranged marriage with large age gap In ancient times this world was filled with magic, but after a war centuries ago where light and dark clashed, it has vanished. Only the Stewards remember, a group of sacred warriors sworn to protect humanity if the Dark King ever returns. Will, a boy on the run after the murder of his mother, is suddenly thrown into this world when he is told of his destiny to battle against the dark. As ancient heroes and villains are reborn into this time, Will and his friends must piece together their roles in this sacred war.
I'm definitely a fan of C.S. Pacat's graphic novel series Fence, so I was really excited to see what this book had in store. In this book we follow multiple perspectives. My favourites were definitely Will and Violet. I liked their take on the world around them and enjoyed exploring the magic system with them. Initially there is a lot to learn about, ancient history, characters and their relationships, and also the culture. All of the characters were unique in their own way and I liked learning more about them. It was something that kept me intrigued. However, I felt that the characters grew very close very quickly, I would have liked to have seen more relationship building for it to feel more believable. In the beginning we're met with action as our main characters are running around London. Unfortunately, after that there wasn't a lot of action until we got to around the halfway point of the book. During this time we did learn more about the world but it felt a bit info dumpy. After that though the action definitely picked up. There were many plot twists that I did not see coming. It made for a very exciting ending to the book and makes me look forward to continuing the series! I'm excited to learn more about this magical world and its characters! If you're looking for a story with political intrigue, ancient stories and magic this is a book to check out! I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat! I hope you enjoyed it! Would you rather read a book from the perspective of the villain, the hero, or a morally grey character? Let me know in the comments below!
