Hi bookworms and welcome to my review of Blood Scion by Deborah Falaye! Thank you to Harper Collins Canada for sending me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. This book comes out March 8th. content warnings
Death, murder, violence, child soldiers, attempted sexual assault, self harm, war, torture Sloane is a Scion, a descendant of ancient Orisha gods. However to survive she must keep this a secret when she is forcibly conscripted as a child soldier. As she rises through the rank, she must remind herself who she really is, to stop from becoming the very monster they claim her to be.
Blood Scion started out at first with a lot of world building and plot points, however it became a bit slow in the middle. The magic system was interesting and I enjoyed seeing how Sloane interacted with her magic, but I wished I had seen more of that. In terms of the characters, I thought they were each fun to learn about. Each having their own unique backstories and personalities. I enjoyed reading about how they interacted with each other but found their friendships were a bit rushed. I also would have loved to learn more about the mythology of the Orisha gods to understand more of Sloane's background. My favourite character would have to be Sloane because I admire her love and dedication to her family. Keep in mind that if you plan to pick up this book I'd recommend checking out the content warnings to see if this is a good fit for you. I gave this book 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review of Blood Scion by Deborah Falaye. I hope you enjoyed it! Would you rather have the power to control fire, water, metal, wind, or earth? Let me know in the comments below!
