Happy Sunday bookworms! Today I'm excited to share my review of Café Con Lychee by Emery Lee with you all! Thank you to HarperCollins Canada for sending me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is out today! content warnings
Homophobia, racism, toxic masculinity, cultural appropriation Café Con Lychee is about Theo and Gabi, the sons of two rival cafés, who decide to work together when faced with a new fusion competitor. Theo wants nothing more than to leave his small town, but with the threat of his parents losing their business, he might have to give that up. Gabi is in a similar situation and can't stand the idea of losing his family's business. The two make a temporary truce and decide to sell food covertly at school in order to make some money and offset the losses. But can they set aside their rivalry to finally work together as a team?
I flew through this book in two days! I was super excited to read Café Con Lychee because the synopsis drew me in right away. The writing style was easy to follow and made for a fast read. The plot was engaging and I especially liked the scenes involving the duo's secret café and the menu items they created. I also enjoyed reading about Theo and Gabi and seeing how they grew as the book progressed. However, I wish we got to see a bit more growth from the side characters. The romance was very sweet and I was rooting for it from page 1! Even though this book is about romance, we also had a big focus on family. Both families were very different from each other and I really enjoyed seeing how this impacted Theo and Gabi. What I loved the most was seeing how these dynamics shifted and changed as our main characters grew. In the end I really enjoyed the focus on family relationships and character growth in this book. I can't wait to read more of Emery's future books! I gave this book 4/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's a wrap on my review for Café Con Lychee by Emery Lee! I hope you enjoyed it! Happy Friday bookworms! Today I'm reviewing What We Harvest by Ann Fraistat! Thank you to Penguin Teen Canada for sending me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is currently available in stores. Content warnings
Death, grief, animal death, violence, gore, contagion illness, medical experimentation (mentioned) Wren lives in a small town known for miracle crops, especially Wren's family farm that has rainbow coloured wheat. Except 5 months ago a strange illness called blight has swept through the town. Now it's come for the neighbours, leaving them foggy eyed and staggering into the woods, only to be seen at nightfall in a zombie like state. One of the last locals standing, the blight has finally come for Wren and she panics, calling her ex, Derek for help. The two quickly realize their miracle crops come at a price and their ancestors might have doomed them all.
The premise of this book reminded me a bit of Small Favors by Erin A. Craig, which initially intrigued me. The story started out a bit slow at first but eventually picked up closer to the end. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of Wren and Derek figuring out what the blight was and what caused it. However, there were a couple of elements that I wish were explored more, like the research team and their families history. I also wish that we could have got to delve more into the personalities of each the characters so that I could connect with them more. The writing style was easy to follow and did a good job of describing the urgency and scariness of the situation. It's definitely a horror/thriller as some pretty chilling stuff occurs, but I thought it was also balanced out well with scenes from the past and also some light hearted dialogue. All in all I wish that we could have gone more in depth on some aspects but overall it was a chilling read. I gave this book 3/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️. That's all for my review of What We Harvest by Ann Fraistat! I hope you enjoyed it! |
